The Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative seeks to facilitate GS1 standards adoption for complete and accurate data in the United States foodservice industry through voluntary individual company adoption and implementation of GS1 standards by foodservice manufacturers, distributors, and operators for:

	GS1 Location Identification - Assignment of the Global Location Number (GLN) for manufacturer, distributor, and operator use, as applicable.
	GS1 Product Identification - Application of the Global Trade Item Number® (GTIN®) to foodservice products to ensure unique identification of individual products.
	Baseline product information (product attributes) to facilitate the aligned exchange of complete and accurate product information among manufacturers, distributors, and operators who voluntarily choose to adopt these attributes.
	GS1 Global Data Synchronization Network® (GDSN®) - GS1 GDSN ensures the continuous real-time exchange of consistent, accurate product information among supply chain partners. The GS1 GDSN is an open platform with many certified technology providers. GDSN data pools are interoperable – publishing to one or retrieving data from one means that companies can retrieve data from all GS1 GDSN-certified data pools.

The Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative serves as a strategic effort in which individual companies and industry trade associations may choose to join on a voluntary basis to assist with their company’s independent decision to adopt and implement GS1 standards (Anti Trust Policy Statement).

The 3 goals of the Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative are to: 

• drive waste out of the foodservice supply chain 
• improve product information for customers 
• establish a foundation for improving food safety and traceability that companies can choose to adopt

The Initiative is striving for 75 percent adoption of GS1 standards throughout the foodservice industry, measured in terms of revenue, by 2015. Participating companies to date include manufacturers, distributors, and operators of all sizes and from many segments of the industry.
