In general, there are three different types of coupons: manufacturer, retailer, and online printable. In the recent past, companies with U.P.C. Company Prefixes greater than 6-digits could not be uniquely identified at coupon processing points by scanning the coupon. Until the new system was implemented, the cost and inaccuracy of redemption continued to rise.

The “North American Coupon Application Guideline Using GS1 DataBar (RSS) Expanded Symbols”, brings data integrity and efficiency to coupons:

  • This solution is a new coupon format and a new coupon barcode with a larger number of optional fields for specifying more complex coupons
  • The new coupon code uses the GS1 Company Prefix (not the U.P.C. Company Prefix) which will allow global companies to introduce coupons to the North American consumer.
