Alcohol Beverage

Every company doing business in the Alcohol Beverage sector is encouraged to join GS1 US™ through its Partner Connections program. GS1 US helps companies in the Alcohol Beverage community come together to assess and address inefficient business processes in order to stabilize operations and increase revenue in throughout the value chain.

GS1 US unlocks the value of standards for the Alcohol Beverage sector through the following initiatives:

  • Data Synchronization: The Alcohol Beverage Industry Supply Chain Council (ABI SCC, formerly known as the ABI EC Council) believes data synchronization will be the launching pad for all future global industry initiatives – Electronic Product Code™ (EPC)/Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, collaborative commerce, anti-counterfeiting, and traceability.
  • Global Trade Item Number (GTIN) use: The ABI SCC has endorsed specific guidelines for U.P.C. barcodes on alcohol beverage bottle application that relate permanent proof change, proof variations by state, age variations by state, gift wrap, special packaging without separate container, and vintages of the same varietal wine.
  • Wine Traceability: The ABI SCC recommends tracking and tracing wine and spirits products throughout the supply chain – from the vineyard to the consumer.

The GS1 Standards used in the Alcohol Beverage sector include:

  • Global Trade Item Numbers® (GTIN-12 and GTIN-13)  for product identification. The GTIN is used on both the physical product as well as in electronic communications between trading partners.
  • Global Location Numbers (GLN)  for identification of companies, divisions, and individual store, manufacturing, or distribution locations. The GLN is used primarily in electronic communications.
  • Serial Shipping Container Code (SSCC)  is used in conjunction with the Advance Ship Notice (ASN). Since the SSCC acts as a license plate for cases and pallets of products, many retailers and their suppliers use it to speed products through distribution centers and other back end receiving processes.
  • Global Data Synchronization to enable quick and efficient exchange of accurate supply chain data that will assist with new item setup, logistics, invoicing, and speed to market.
  • EDI ecommerce transaction sets for Purchase Orders, Advance Shipping Notices and Invoices.
