Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative Roadmap

The Foodservice GS1 US Standards Initiative seeks to facilitate GS1 Standards adoption in an effort to make the industry’s value chain more visible, secure, and sustainable with complete and accurate data.

Important Note: Nothing in the roadmap should be construed as constituting or implying an agreement concerning prices, output, markets, or dealings with customers and suppliers. Each participating company must exercise its independent business judgment in pricing its services or products, dealing with its customers and suppliers and choosing the markets in which it will compete. This is provided only as a strategic roadmap that individual companies may choose to employ in conjunction with their voluntary adoption of GS1 Standards.

The GS1 US Team for Foodservice, working with the newly formed Steering Committee for Foodservice and Working Group for Foodservice, will develop and deploy a coordinated marketing, information, and promotional program to assist individual companies in their voluntary implementation of GS1 Standards and to recommend the use of GS1 Standards to additional companies in the foodservice industry.

Manufacturers, Distributors, and Operators acquire GS1 Company Prefixes (if needed).

The foundation of the GS1 System is the unique GS1 Company Prefix assigned by a GS1 Member Organization. To acquire a GS1 Company Prefix in the United States, a participating company should contact GS1 US (www.gs1us.org).

Manufacturers, Distributors, and Operators assign headquarters Global Location Numbers (GLNs) and register them with GS1.

A participating company assigns its headquarters Global Location Number (GLN) using the GS1 GLN Allocation Rules.

Verify barcodes with GS1 US [Manufacturers send any extended barcodes - when they use Application Identifiers (AIs) - to GS1 US to make sure AIs are scannable and accurate with respect to structure, symbology, magnification].

A participating Distributor should scan GTINs and Lot Numbers as products are shipped to its Operators. 2012 is the target date proposed for the Produce Traceability Initiative (PTI). Once Lot Numbers are embedded in barcodes, a participating Manufacturer or Brand Owner would also be able to scan outbound to capture that data.

There will be quarterly analytical updates on overall progress and actions of industry trade groups and government regulators (produce, meat and poultry, dairy and others) by GS1 US™ and the Steering Committee and Working Group for Foodservice to monitor progress. In addition, new industry trade group and regulatory developments will be communicated in as close to real time as possible, as they occur or in anticipation of their occurrence, to members of the Steering Committee and Working Group for Foodservice, and the GS1 US Team for Foodservice to keep the groups informed so that they can, in turn, advise and inform individual company participants.

 

The term "Manufacturer" includes both national brands and private label manufacturers.

  The term "products" can include cases, inner packs, and unit levels.
  The term "Operators" includes various foodservice customers, such as hospitals, schools, hotels etc.
