GS1 US is At the Root of Traceability. Food safety, product tracing, and product recalls are among the top challenges for the Fresh Foods value chain. GS1 US offers standards and solutions to enhance your current business processes to address today’s challenges.
GS1 US unlocks the value of standards for the Fresh Foods sector through the following initiatives:
- GS1 DataBar™ Sunrise for Produce: January 1, 2010.
GS1 US recommended that retailers selling loose produce and processing manufacturer coupons begin preparing point-of-sale hardware and software systems to scan and process GS1 DataBar symbols and numbers by January 1, 2010. Retailer adoption of point-of sale-scanning of loose produce items and manufacturer coupons is well underway in the U.S., and suppliers in these categories of business are continuing on the path of complete implementation.
- GS1 DataBar Sunrise for other fresh food categories: January 1, 2014.
GS1 US recommends that all other categories of retailers consider preparing point-of-sale hardware and software systems to scan and process GS1 DataBar symbols and numbers by January 1, 2014. Examples of industries expressing interest in implementation of GS1 DataBar prior to 2014 are healthcare, magazine publishers, cosmetics, jewelry, and fresh food categories such as meat, poultry, and fish.
