Leveraging Smart Data

How We Help

As the pace of consumer and business change keeps accelerating, the role of GS1 US is more relevant than ever. Despite massive amounts of data, companies are struggling to structure, govern, and share it for maximum value.

Companies—and now consumers—don’t just need data. Smart data is not only accurate and reliable, it is structured so that it can flow through all of our information ecosystems. Smart data is visible, linkable, searchable, sharable, and traceable. Smart data is critical for companies optimizing business processes, consumers making purchasing decisions, and regulators protecting public safety.

GS1 Standards

Smart Data Starts with Standards

Over decades of technological innovation and across diverse industries, everything we do points to one thing: the integrity and usability of data. GS1 Standards provide a three-layered foundation. GS1 identification standards uniquely identify products, locations, and assets. GS1 data carriers and GS1 data exchange standards then enable information capturing and sharing throughout the system. Each layer plays an important role in efficiently moving a product from the source to the consumer.

GS1 Company Prefix—Identifying a Company is Job One

A GS1 Company Prefix is a unique identification number issued to a specific company—and it’s part of every barcode and identification number that the company creates. This number uniquely identifies a brand in the global supply chain with every product identifier created.

GS1 Standards begin with GS1 Identification Numbers that uniquely distinguish products (trade items), logistics units, locations, assets, and relationships across the supply chain from manufacturer to consumer. These numbers link the product with the information pertaining to it.

Capture—GS1 Data Carriers Enable Automation

GS1 data carriers, such as barcodes, RFID, and digital watermarking, can hold varying amounts of data to accommodate different needs for different products and processes. Data encoded in GS1 data carriers uniquely identifies products at every level of packaging and provides access to product information and visibility of product movement through the supply chain. The ability to identify a product automatically—enabling speed and accuracy—has transformed commerce.

Interoperability, made possible by identification standards, data capture standards, and data exchange standards, allows product information to flow between trading partners. GS1 Standards enables three main types of data exchange: master product data through the Global Data Synchronization Network™ (GDSN®), transactional data through Electronic Data Exchange (EDI), and physical event data through the Electronic Product Code Information Services (EPCIS).
